  • I have difficulty using my arm or shoulder the same as before my surgery or radiation.
  • I have pain in my armpit and/or my arm.
  • I am struggling with nausea and/or fatigue during or after chemotherapy.
  • I could use some advice on coping with breast cancer.
  • I have discomfort or weakness related to my breast reconstruction surgery.
  • I have discomfort in my chest wall or drain sites.
  • I have swelling in my breast, chest or arm.
  • I have questions about lymphedema.
  • I am concerned about weight gain.
  • I need help to get started with a safe and effective exercise program.
  • I am not sure how to cope with changes in self-image and sexuality.

If so, you would benefit from specialized breast cancer rehabilitation!

Physical, Psychological and Emotional Issues

Research indicates that during and after treatment for breast cancer, many patients experience a variety of physical and emotional issues. These may be related to surgery, chemotherapy or radiation and can be termed ‘survivorship issues’. Rehabilitation professionals who specialize in breast cancer can help you to manage, reduce or eliminate these survivorship issues. Rehabilitation professionals include physical therapists, occupational therapists, dietitians, counselors, social workers and massage therapists.

What Can Rehabilitation Do for You?

Rehabilitation programs that specialize in breast cancer wellness offer a unique understanding of the types of breast cancer and reconstruction surgery, effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatment. Your physician, nurse or breast cancer center at your hospital can suggest resources to assist you in overcoming the physical, psychological and emotional issues related to breast cancer.

Management of the Physical and Emotional Issues

Physical Therapy
Manual Therapy, exercise and other modalities may be used to decrease pain, increase range of motion and strength and improve function. Specialized physical therapists can provide education and treatment for lymphedema.

Exercise
Exercise has a special role to play in decreasing fatigue, controlling weight, increasing quality of life and reducing risk of recurrence. A physical therapist can assist you in developing an exercise program that is safe and specific to your individual needs.

Massage Therapy
Massage therapy can benefit women by decreasing stress, increasing sense of well-being and improving the function of the immune system.

Nutritional Counseling
Consultation with a dietitian can assist women during chemotherapy with tips to reduce nausea and maintain a healthy diet. After breast cancer treatment, a dietitian can assist women in returning to full health and in controlling weight by providing advice on diet and supplements.

Counseling and Support Groups
Individual counseling and professionally-led support groups can assist in dealing with fear and anxiety, concerns related to family and friends and issues related to sexuality and body image.  These provide opportunities to network with other breast cancer survivors.
