Phytoestrogens (Soy, etc.)

Phystoestrogens are chemicals found in plants that contain properties that mimic the estrogen in a women’s body. This is why they are such a hot topic when it comes to breast cancer. Unfortunately, the research and the overall position on phytoestrogen consumption in patients with breast cancer are inconclusive. Phytoestrogens found in our food sources that are consumed in moderation are not believed to have adverse effects on women with breast cancer. Supplements that contain high levels of phytoestrogen should be avoided.
Over three hundred foods contain phytoestrogen; therefore, making it difficult to avoid entirely in our diets. Some of the foods with higher levels, that should be consumed in moderation, are flax seed, tofu, soy beans, sesame seeds, and soy yogurt. Other food sources can be found at www.dietaryfiberfood.com/phytoestrogen.php.
